Design: Hard (I'm using engines to protect reactors and crs, very redundant, can still win even if heavily damaged) 

Piloting: Hard (Ion power is weaker than average, you need to aim the beam and know when to explode charges to win) 

 

The design I came up with after months of tweaking ions. It's designed to be as flexible as possible, it tries to avoid being easily countered. Its main counters are avoiders, tb rails and orbital walls, and all of those ships require some piloting skill to win. It's a very heavy ship, with a lot of side and front armor, to compensate for the lack of ion power. Its ion core is a 20:5, but you can aim the beam. This is very helpful in most battles, but it results in a wider ion barrel, so it's less protected. If needed, it can get rid of front armor to be faster and aim the beam while orbiting the enemy. This is useful against missile ships, railfans with less than 8 railguns, tb and some kites/traps. Don't remove front armor against ions, dcs or anything with ebs. The thick front and side armor allows it to tank 4-6 nuke volleys. The ram hooks or "horns" are longer than usual. This usually scares the enemy and forces them to target the hook charges, that are protected under a few layers of armor. This is a heavy ship, so an impact with one of the hooks could leave the enemy ship stuck in a side ram.
